A teenage boy’s arm was cut off after he was “subway surfing” outside a New York City train.

At around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, police responded to a call about an injured boy at 74th Street and Broadway station in Queens. When they got there, they discovered a 15-year-old with his left arm removed from his body. During an initial investigation, police learned the boy was hit by one of the trains while performing a stunt called “subway surfing.” His arm was sliced “from the elbow down.”

The New York Post reports that during interviews, witnesses told authorities the boy tried to climb to the top of the train, and that’s when he fell and landed on the tracks. “A preliminary investigation determined that the male was struck by a northbound R train as it was pulling away from the station,” NYPD said, according to PEOPLE. “The aided is not believed to be the victim of a crime. The investigation remains ongoing at this time.”

“We know he was subway surfing on the outside of the car,” a Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) worker told The Post. “Usually, when you’re subway surfing, you have to get off the train before the tunnel. He must’ve miss that point.”

One of the workers said the boy was in such shock that he didn’t even react to his arm being gone. His arm was found at the next stop and was transported to the hospital with the teen.
