Telegram App Store searches are returning empty results for iPhone users across multiple regions, leaving new users unable to download the popular messaging platform and existing users questioning whether future updates will arrive.
According to reports from iPhone users in the United States, Telegram stopped appearing in App Store searches late Monday, August 3, 2026. Users said direct download links also produced unavailable messages. Similar reports from Telegram users in Europe described the same issue, while commenters reported that the app could not be found in storefronts connected to Singapore and other countries.
Apple and Telegram had not posted public explanations through the Apple Newsroom or the official Telegram blog as of late Monday evening. Apple’s public web page for Telegram Messenger was still visible in some browser searches during the developing outage, but the presence of a web listing does not confirm that users can download the app through the App Store itself.
Users who already had Telegram installed reported that messages, calls, and notifications continued working normally. Those accounts suggest the Telegram App Store issue is currently affecting distribution rather than the underlying messaging service. Apple has not indicated that it remotely disabled existing installations, and Telegram’s web-based service also remained accessible through the company’s official web application.
The immediate concern is what happens if the disappearance continues. Without an active Telegram App Store listing, new iPhone owners cannot complete a normal installation. Existing users could also have trouble reinstalling Telegram after deleting it or moving to a replacement device. A prolonged removal would become more serious if Telegram released an urgent security update that iPhone users could not receive through Apple’s standard distribution system.
Apple has temporarily removed Telegram before. In January 2018, 9to5Mac reported that Telegram and Telegram X disappeared from the App Store without an immediate explanation. Telegram founder Pavel Durov later said Apple had alerted the company that “inappropriate content” was available through the platform. Telegram returned after the company addressed Apple’s concerns.
Apple’s current App Review Guidelines require platforms featuring user-generated content to provide tools that filter objectionable material, allow users to report content, respond to complaints, and block abusive accounts. Apple also says applications can be removed when developers fail to demonstrate that their moderation systems meet the company’s safety requirements.
However, no public evidence currently shows that the new Telegram App Store disappearance involves a moderation violation. Apple has not announced a guideline enforcement action, and Telegram has not said that an update was rejected. The absence of an official explanation leaves several possibilities open, including a technical distribution problem, a policy dispute, a legal demand, or a temporary review issue.
Telegram also has a history of being removed from individual national storefronts following government orders. In April 2024, Apple removed Telegram, WhatsApp, Signal, and Threads from the mainland Chinese App Store. Apple said China’s internet regulator ordered the removals because of “national security concerns.”
Apple said it was “obligated to follow the laws in the countries where we operate, even when we disagree.” That incident was limited to China and came with a publicly identified government request. The current reports are different because users connected to several international storefronts say Telegram has disappeared at the same time.
The timing has also drawn attention because Durov is facing new pressure from Russian authorities. According to Reuters, Russia’s Federal Security Service charged Durov on July 29 with facilitating terrorist activity and said it was placing him on an international wanted list. Some coverage has described the accusation more broadly as “aiding terrorism.”
Russian authorities allege that Ukrainian intelligence operatives used Telegram to recruit people and coordinate attacks inside Russia. Those allegations have not been proven in court, and Telegram has previously accused Moscow of using security claims to restrict privacy and free expression. Durov could face life imprisonment if convicted under the Russian case.
One day after the charges were announced, Russia’s financial monitoring agency added Durov to a government watchlist. The original report described it as a list of “terrorists and extremists.”
Durov continues to face a separate investigation in France connected to allegations involving criminal activity and content moderation on Telegram. However, he is no longer barred from leaving France. French authorities lifted his travel restrictions and police reporting requirement in November 2025 while the investigation continued.
There is currently no verified connection between Durov’s legal cases and the Telegram App Store disappearance. Neither Apple nor Telegram has publicly accused a government of requesting the reported global removal, and Russian authorities have not announced that Apple took action on their behalf. Treating the timing as proof of a connection would go beyond the available evidence.
Telegram remained listed on Google Play during the iPhone reports, and users could still access Telegram through desktop applications and the web. That makes the current restriction specific to Apple’s mobile distribution system unless additional platforms announce changes.
For the moment, iPhone users who already have Telegram installed should think carefully before deleting it. Until Apple restores the listing or either company explains the situation, reinstalling the application may not be possible through the normal Telegram App Store process.
