A Tennessee man was released on bond after he assaulted his estranged wife. When he was let free, he killed his wife and her mother before taking his own life.

On Monday, police were called to 1400 Whispering Oaks Drive in the StoneBridge subdivision of Lebanon, a Nashville suburb, after they received reports of a shooting. Police later learned that 36-year-old Shaun Varsos broke into the home “armed with a shotgun” at 7:30 a.m. The home belonged to Deborah Sisco, the mother of Varsos’ estranged wife Marie Varsos. At the time, Marie was staying with her mother at that address.

Varsos opened fire on the women, and one of them returned fire back at him, People reports. Police believe Varsos was shot during the incident before fatally shooting Marie and Deborah. Afterward, Varsos left the scene. Police later found his body inside of an SUV in Bellevue, near his residence. Police also saw what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Varsos’ violent behavior started before the shooting.

Back on March 4, Marie filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences, according to court records. The next week, Varsos was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment. The charges came from an incident in which Varsos tried to strangle Marie and pointed a gun at her. On March 11, he was released after posting 10 percent of a $30,000 bond.

Marie was scheduled to appear for an order of protection hearing on March 22, but Varsos had the hearing postponed until April 19.
