A former college football player in Texas has been arrested and charged with murder in the death of Ty Underwood, a 24 year old transgender woman, according to police and reporting from Outsports. Carlton is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Ty was found dead in a wrecked car on January 26th. Witnesses told investigators the car hit a telephone pole before gunshots were heard, and police said Ty had several gunshot wounds.
According to details from the arrest paperwork, Carlton first told investigators he had not communicated with Ty since the night before. Investigators then recovered messages on the app Kik going back to January 19th. Police said those messages showed the two had been in touch the night of the shooting, and that they had planned to meet after midnight before an argument over ending the relationship. A detective wrote that the messages showed the two had been involved with each other.
Police also said they have evidence tying Carlton to the crime, including blood on his clothing, the messages, and surveillance footage showing him leaving his dorm that night. Carlton had not been convicted when this was reported, and the case was still moving through the courts.
We are keeping Ty’s family and friends in our thoughts.
