Joana Vara houston

Officials say a 21-year-old woman shot a Texas nail salon owner because she was unhappy with the price of her manicure and pedicure.

According to Harris County jail records, Joana Vara was arrested on Thursday and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Her bond was set at $60,000, and she was due in court on Monday. Vara’s legal representation is unknown.

Vara and her 20-year-old sister went to Katy Nails in Houston for a manicure and pedicure on May 29 but began arguing with the owner because they were “unhappy with the price of the services,” according to a statement from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Vara left her sister arguing in the business, came back, and the male owner tried to push her out, according to the statement. Vara and her sister fled the salon after shooting the proprietor with a revolver.

According to a statement from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the owner, a 42-year-old Asian man, was flown to Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center in critical but stable condition.

Vara had fled after leaving her phone at the salon, according to the statement.

According to the sheriff’s office, Vara’s sister was arrested for fleeing but not charged in connection with the nail salon incident. She was no longer in detention as of Monday, according to jail records.
