Teyana Taylor Went From Underrated To Untouchable, And BET Just Made Her Icon Status Official

BET is putting a crown on a run Teyana Taylor has been building one lane at a time. The network announced that the moment is official, with Taylor set to receive the Icon of the Year Award sponsored by Hyundai at the “BET Awards” 2026. The show will air live Sunday, June 28, at 8 PM ET/PT from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with Druski hosting.

What makes this one hit different is the timing. BET is not handing Taylor a nostalgia trophy for who she used to be. The network framed the Icon of the Year Award around the artist defining the current moment, and Taylor has quietly made that description hard to debate. She has moved from R&B fan favorite to director, actress, producer, choreographer, and style force without waiting for one industry to fully catch up before taking over the next.

“Teyana Taylor is the embodiment of what it means to be an icon in this moment,” said Connie Orlando, EVP, Specials, Music Programming & Music Strategy, BET. “She doesn’t ask for a seat at the table; she builds the table, designs the rooms, and sets the tone for everyone who walks in. Her fingerprints are all over culture, and it is an honor to celebrate everything she represents on Culture’s Biggest Night.”

The Harlem-born entertainer first broke through musically with her 2014 debut album “VII,” then pushed further with “K.T.S.E.” and “The Album.” BET notes that “K.T.S.E.” is Gold-certified, “The Album” became a Top 10 project, “Gonna Love Me” reached 2x Platinum status, and “Issues/Hold On” went Platinum. Billboard also reported that “The Album” debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 and topped Billboard’s R&B Albums chart, marking a major commercial peak in her music career.

Still, the bigger story is how Taylor refused to stay boxed in. As “Spike Tey,” she won BET’s Video Director of the Year in 2020 and again in 2023, proving her eye behind the camera was not a side quest. That matters here because her icon case is not built on one hit, one look, or one viral moment. It is built on control of the whole frame.

Then came the acting pivot that made Hollywood look up. Taylor’s performance in “A Thousand and One” earned her Breakthrough Performance honors from the National Board of Review and a Breakthrough Performance Award from the Critics Choice Association’s Celebration of Cinema & Television. The role also landed her a Best Lead Performance nomination at the Film Independent Spirit Awards and an Outstanding Lead Performance nomination from The Gotham Awards.

By 2026, that momentum had turned into a full awards-season run. Taylor won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture for “One Battle After Another,” then earned an Academy Award nomination in the supporting actress category for the same film. Her visual album “Escape Room” also brought her a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album, giving her another major credential in the same stretch.

The résumé keeps expanding outside awards rooms, too. Netflix lists Taylor among the cast of “The Rip” with Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Steven Yeun, Kyle Chandler, and Catalina Sandino Moreno, while Hulu names her in the ensemble of Ryan Murphy’s “All’s Fair” alongside Kim Kardashian, Naomi Watts, Niecy Nash-Betts, Sarah Paulson, and Glenn Close.

Taylor has also picked up broader cultural recognition this year. Billboard honored her with its 2026 Women in Music Visionary Award, and TIME included her in its 2026 Women of the Year coverage, tying the moment back to a career that has always moved through sound, image, movement, and self-definition at once.

So yes, BET calling Teyana Taylor Icon of the Year is an award announcement. However, it also reads like a correction. For years, Taylor’s influence was easy to feel and too often undercounted. Now, with the music catalog, the directing wins, the film accolades, the fashion presence, and the industry hardware lining up at once, the conversation is finally matching the work.
