NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbarr is making headlines again for a meaningful cause.
Abdul-Jabbar, 71, recently auctioned off four of his NBA title rings, earned from his time with the L.A. Lakers in 1980, 1985, 1987 and 1988. In addition to the rings, the baller auctioned off signed memorabilia, including various game jerseys, trophies and a signed basketball from his last playoff game in 1989.
Goldin Auctions hosted the auction. Upon its completion, Abdul-Jabbar reportedly raised $2.8 million, most of which will be distributed to Abdul-Jabbar’s Skyhook Foundation, a STEM-based charity organization for kids.
On his website, Abdul-Jabbar said, “I am less personally attached to those items than I am to my desire to create new history for myself—and futures for others.” He goes on to say, “When it comes to choosing between storing a championship ring or trophy in a room, or providing kids with an opportunity to change their lives, the choice is pretty simple. Sell it all”. Well put, Kareem, we couldn’t agree with you more.
