The European Commission has intensified its scrutiny of Twitter (X), led by Elon Musk, ordering the platform to hand over internal files detailing its algorithms and content moderation practices.

The investigation is part of the EU’s efforts to enforce the Digital Services Act (DSA), targeting platforms accused of amplifying harmful content and engaging in political manipulation. The EU has given the app until February 15th, 2025, to provide documents related to its “recommender system,” which suggests content to users. This includes details on recent changes and whether the algorithms disproportionately boost far-right content and politicians.

“Today, we are taking further steps to shed light on the compliance of X’s recommender systems with the obligations under the DSA,” stated Henna Virkkunen, EU digital commissioner. The commission has also issued a retention order requiring the platform to preserve records of algorithm adjustments until the investigation concludes.

The move follows allegations that Musk’s platform has skewed content visibility, favoring specific political narratives. Musk has drawn criticism for his public support of far-right parties, including Germany’s Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), and his contentious role in European politics. While Musk has defended his actions as free speech, the EU is evaluating whether Twitter’s practices undermine democratic principles by suppressing alternative viewpoints.

The investigation underscores the EU’s resolve to regulate major tech platforms and enforce transparency, ensuring compliance with laws designed to protect a safe and fair digital environment for all citizens.
