Ahmaud Arbery

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations has identified the person behind the cryptic card that was left at a memorial for Ahmaud Arbery.

While GBI did not elaborate on the person’s identity, they did say that “the individual is not connected to the Ahmaud Arbery murder investigation in any way.”

The eerie card was placed at the makeshift memorial for Ahmaud on the same street he was murdered on in February. Jacksonville news station, News4JAX, snapped a photo of the card, which reads, “Ahmaud, I am so sorry. I should have stopped them. I am so sorry.” The writer did not sign the card, and it is unclear when the card was placed there. However, the emergence of the card has raised questions about additional witnesses who have not come forward in the case and whether or not measures could have been taken to save his life on that fateful afternoon.

In a statement to TMZ, Lee Merritt, Arbery’s family attorney, called the note a “critical piece of evidence” and said that it is now part of Ahmaud’s legal team’s case file. However, the agency said the individual was just “expressing their condolences for Arbery’s death.”

34-year-old Travis McMichael and his father, 64-year-old Gregory McMichael were arrested nearly three months after the shooting,  and were charged with murder and aggravated assault in Arbery’s death.
