Pilot orders to three comedies have been ordered at ABC, and one of the series selected is a reboot of the 1980’s hit show The Wonder Years.
A show which once revolved around a white-middle class family in the 1960s is now getting a new perspective, with the help of Lee Daniels and Lee Daniels Entertainment (LDE). The reboot will focus on “how a Black middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama, in the turbulent late ’60s made sure it was “the wonder years” for them, too,” According to The Hollywood Reporter.
“This will be a GREAT reboot! Let’s go ABC!,” Daniels shared to his Instagram along with an image confirming the news of the reboot.
Saladin K. Patterson, credited for his work on The Bernie Mac Show and Frasier, will be writing the script and executive producing alongside Daniels and LDE banner president, Marc Velez.
Fred Savage, who at 13 became the “youngest actor nominated for a lead actor in a comedy series Emmy” for his role on the show in the ’80s, will also join as an executive producer in addition to directing the pilot.
Original show creator Neal Marlens is attached as a consultant, THR reported. The outlet also noted that Disney-owned 20th Century Fox Television will be producing.
In addition to The Wonder World reboot, ABC has also given the OK to two other series, Maggie, based on the short film by Tim Curcio, and an “untitled multicamera comedy from writer Regina Hicks and exec producers Viola Davis and Larry Wilmore.”
