A Los Angeles wig shop that serves cancer patients was recently robbed for hairpieces worth tens of thousands of dollars.
On Tuesday, around 3:30 a.m., three thieves broke into Beverly Hills wig shop, The Wig Fairy, specializing in human hair wigs for women suffering from hair loss.
According to a surveillance video, the three women were seen wearing hoodies and face masks, using poles and rocks to break in. Based on the footage, the thieves recklessly tore wigs off the hooks in seconds.
“Unfortunately, our salon was broken into this morning. We assure you that we’re working tirelessly to get your orders and the salon back on track,” An announcement posted to Instagram read. “Although our doors will be closed today. Please feel free to call us or message us with any questions. We hope to resume regular operation hours Wednesday 8/23.”
“It hurts not because of our inventory because that can be replaced, right, that’s not it. It’s just so many people, so many people that are going through their hair loss it’s like I need it now,” said owner Mona, according to CBS News.
The store also houses its non-profit component, the Brave Project, focused on boosting women’s confidence in dealing with hair loss from cancer treatment, alopecia, burns, or genetics.
“They come to us and say, ’Please make me look like myself. The last thing I need is — I don’t want people to give me pity. I don’t want people to know I am wearing wigs,” Mona said. “How do I explain to them that I don’t have a wig for you?” she said.
Each wig, individually tailored for a specific customer, comes at a cost ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 and requires weeks to create due to its custom design and styling process.
“It’s not a basic designer purse, not shoes. It’s not something I can grab another box in the back,” she said. “Everything is customized, so that’s again where the heartbreaking comes from, the kids that are starting school these days… and I was like, ‘oh you know your wig. I’m so sorry mom, can you bring her back in again?'”
Beverly Hills police are investigating the incident.
