A high school basketball player in Windsor, Ontario is facing an immigration problem after Canadian officials reportedly alleged he is far older than he claimed, according to the Detroit Free Press and the Windsor Star.
Jonathan, a native of South Sudan, was the starting center for the Central Catholic Comets during the 2015 to 2016 season. He stands 6 feet 9 inches and was listed as 17 years old. He came to Canada on a student visa through Canada Homestay, an organization that places foreign students with host families.
According to the reports, the Canada Border Services Agency obtained evidence that he is actually about 30. If that holds up, it would mean the age on his paperwork was wrong, and his student visa could be terminated. He is reportedly in custody with a hearing scheduled for next week. No finding has been made, and we could not find a response from Jonathan at the time of publication.
Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board spokesman Stephen Fields told the Star that parents have nothing to be concerned about and that students were not in danger.
