Phoenix police have arrested three suspects in the September 12 shooting of a photographer at Encanto Park, according to ABC15 and Fox 10 Phoenix.
Police say the 33 year old victim was taking photos at the park when a group of three people asked him to take their picture. After the photo was taken, police say the group began yelling racial slurs at him. Video aired by Fox 10 Phoenix shows the victim telling the group that they should not use the n-word. One of them answered with a profane remark that he says what he wants, and the victim replied that they could not say it in front of him. Police say he was shot nine times right after the exchange.
Police say the photographer suffered serious injuries but has started to recover. “I’m here because of the blessing of God,” he told ABC15.
Police say Ricardo, 18, was arrested on September 17, and Angel, 18, was arrested on September 25 along with a third suspect who is a minor and is not named here. Police say one suspect pulled a gun on officers during an arrest, but the weapon was taken before it could be used. Authorities served search warrants at two homes and say they found methamphetamine, four handguns and a ballistic vest.
According to police, the suspects face possible charges that include aggravated assault, misconduct involving weapons, resisting arrest and gang activity. They are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Police say they were able to identify the group because of the photo the victim took of them.
Asked what he would say to the suspects, the victim told reporters he would simply ask them why, adding that he was nothing but nice to them.
