Three teens have been arrested for the brutal slaying of a beloved swan, which they ate during Memorial Day Weekend.
The attack on the famed swan, Faye, was a calculated and cruel one that took place on Saturday, May 27th. That is when 18-year-old Eman Hussan, with the help of his 16-year-old and 17-year-old accomplices, kidnapped Faye and her four babies from Manlius Swan Pond in Manlius, New York. An employee who was tending to flowers witnessed the three taking off with the family of birds.
For unknown reasons, the three ate Faye over Memorial Day Weekend, though her cygnets were unharmed.
During Wednesday’s morning press conference, police said the suspects jumped a gate in the middle of the night to pull off the heist. They each held down the adult swan and killed her onsite. Afterward, they took the deceased swan home, cooked it, and fed it to family and friends without their knowledge. Loved ones who consumed the bird were told it was a large duck. The young men told police they had no intentions of killing the babies but were planning to raise them. They have since been located and turned over to biologists, who will tend to them for four weeks before placing them back in the pond with Manny, who is the father swan.
Faye belonged to a family of swans who had been in the pond for years. The original members were donated in 1905. The teens have been charged with felony counts of grand larceny and mischief and misdemeanor counts of conspiracy and criminal trespass. Faye’s killers were arrested on Tuesday, though Hussan seemed to think the entire ordeal was one big joke. He was seen grinning as police handcuffed him and led him away. The identities of the remaining teens have not been made public due to their ages.
