In a lengthy Instagram post, Bassett praised the rock and roll and soul singer. She revealed that Turner made it clear that she never felt impersonated by Bassett in the biopic.
“Her final words to me – for me – were, “You never mimicked me. Instead, you reached deep into your soul, found your inner Tina, and showed her to the world,” the actress wrote, adding, “I shall hold these words close to my heart for the rest of my days.”
The renowned actress portrayed the international superstar in her most notable role to date, which earned her an Oscar nomination in 1994 for Best Actress. “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” which arrived in theaters on June 9th, 1993, is widely regarded as one of the greatest biopics ever made. The film netted roughly $61 million at the box office. Turner was hands-on with the telling of her life story, which involved her in the duo Ike & Tina Turner from 1960 to 1976. She’d eventually branch out on her own after leaving the abusive relationship, embarking on a successful solo career.
