Tinder Reports 2020 Was its Busiest Year Despite Pandemic, Social Distancing Warnings

Despite a global pandemic and warning of social distancing, Tinder saw a record amount of activity in 2020.

“Tinder’s engagement and activity grew significantly throughout 2020 with 11% more Swipes and 42% more matches per member,” the California-based company said in a statement to PEOPLE.

With COVID-19 lockdowns limiting interaction, dating sites saw a boom. Tinder Match, OkCupid, and Plenty of Fish all saw an increase in activity. At the height of lockdowns, Tinder saw record-breaking wipe activity. On March 29, 2020, Tinder recorded a record-breaking 3 billion swipes in one day. The app achieved that same milestone 130 more times over the last year.

The company took a deep dive into dating during the pandemic and recently released its findings in a report. Tinder found Gen Z sent 19 percent more messages per day in February of 2021 compared to the year before. Conversation length grew by 32 percent during the pandemic. Gen Z users also spent more time updating their bios than they did pre-pandemic.

Tinder noted that video chatting has also become more popular as a means to communicate.

The apps have also adapted. Several dating apps created “I’m Vaccinated” badges for users who wish to disclose their status on their profiles.
