Tory Lanez’s legal team is pushing for his release, claiming he’s been wrongfully convicted. During a press conference held Wednesday, lawyers introduced what they say is new evidence showing Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, didn’t fire the gun the night Megan Thee Stallion was shot in the Hollywood Hills.

Lanez is currently serving a 10-year sentence for allegedly shooting Megan, born Megan Pete. But his legal representatives now argue the entire story was misrepresented and that Megan lied about what actually happened.
“Mr. Peterson was never given a fair trial, free from bias, political interference and media-driven pressure,” said Gianno Caldwell, who has joined the fight to overturn the verdict.
The press briefing was organized by Unite the People, a nonprofit dedicated to social justice and legal advocacy. According to its website, the organization works with attorneys and activists to support communities in need.
The conference took place just days after Lanez was stabbed multiple times by another inmate at a California prison. In a message to his 11.4 million Instagram followers, he revealed he was stabbed in the back, head, torso, and face. He’s currently receiving medical care at a hospital in Bakersfield.
“We think it’s time. Enough is enough. It’s time to bring the brother home,” said Ceasar McDowell, co-founder and CEO of Unite the People, as he opened the press conference.
Attorney Walter Roberts claimed the real shooter was Megan’s former friend, Kelsey Harris. According to Roberts, Harris fired three times at Megan, and Lanez intervened. “[Harris] fired at [Megan] three times. Mr. Peterson grabbed her arm and knocked it down, and the gun fired two more times. In essence, Mr. Peterson never shot anybody. Never even touched the gun. He never fired the gun,” Roberts said.
Roberts also referenced trial witness Sean Kelly, the only person not directly involved, who testified to seeing two women fighting. Roberts added that three people were in the car that night, but only Lanez’s DNA was tested, even though unidentified DNA was found on the weapon.
As Lanez recovers from his injuries, his legal team hopes this new evidence will prompt California Governor Gavin Newsom to review the case and allow Lanez to return home rather than back to prison.
