Tour de France Crash

Tour de France Crash

The fan who caused the massive pile-up crash on the opening day of the Tour de France will avoid prosecution after the Tour organizers decided not to press charges.

According to CBS News, the woman who leaned out into the road in front of the lead pack of cyclists holding up a homemade banner for the TV cameras caused a massive pile up and then fled the scene.

The accident injured at least 21 cyclists, including four-time champion Chris Froome of Britain.

Authorities did not identify the woman who was in custody on Wednesday. However, local media outlets reported that she was a 30-year-old Frenchwoman.

ASO, the tour organizers, had originally said they would bring a lawsuit against her for involuntarily causing injury through reckless behavior — a charge that carries a $1,770 fine.

But they said they no longer wanted to press charges in a bid to calm the situation, but they are reminding fans to keep away from the riders.
