Trey Songz is officially taking his grievances to court, filing a civil lawsuit against the Kansas City Police Department and Whelan Event Services.
The legal move stems from a 2021 incident at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium that left the singer in handcuffs and under a mountain of criminal charges that were later tossed out.
According to the petition filed on January 22, 2026, Trey was an invited guest at the AFC Championship game when the vibe shifted. The singer alleges that he was being relentlessly heckled by nearby fans because of his celebrity status. However, instead of the security team de-escalating the rowdy crowd, the lawsuit claims they turned their aggression toward him.
The court documents allege that KCPD and security “physically assaulted, wrongfully arrested, handcuffed, and detained” Trey. While fans might remember the viral footage of the scuffle, Trey’s legal team argues that the officers failed in their “legal duty to take reasonable measures to protect” him as an invitee on the property.
Trey was initially hit with heavy charges, including trespassing, resisting arrest, and even assaulting a police officer for allegedly punching a member of law enforcement. Those charges were eventually dismissed, but Trey says the damage was already done. In his suit, he claims he suffered physical injuries, emotional distress, and a significant “loss of reputation and loss of income.”
The singer is now seeking unspecified damages that the court deems “fair and reasonable” for the long-term harm he says he’s endured.
With a jury trial officially demanded, Trey is looking to prove that he was the victim, not the aggressor, in a situation that he feels was handled with excessive force from the start.
