Louisiana Elementary School Teacher Accused Of Grooming A Minor And Sexual Battery: Investigation Started With Messages Parents Found

A group of concerned Louisiana parents helped expose allegations that have now left teacher and basketball coach Trey Sparks facing multiple sex crime charges across two parishes.

According to WBRZ, the investigation began after parents discovered troubling messages between a juvenile and Sparks, 30. Ponchatoula Police Chief Bry Layrisson said authorities received the initial complaint around September 13, eventually obtaining warrants for Sparks’ Snapchat accounts and electronic devices.

The Trey Sparks investigation led to his October 6 arrest on four counts of possessing child sexual abuse material and one count of prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and student. Per jail records, the material allegedly depicted children younger than 13.

At the time, Sparks taught at D.C. Reeves Elementary School and coached basketball at Ponchatoula Junior High School.

However, the allegations didn’t stop there.

According to WAFB, investigators discovered evidence pointing to additional alleged victims in neighboring Livingston Parish. Authorities subsequently accused Sparks of molestation of a juvenile, sexual battery, grooming, computer-aided solicitation of a minor, producing and possessing child sexual abuse material, and other offenses involving juveniles.

Investigators believe the alleged Livingston Parish incidents occurred during 2023 and 2024, when Sparks worked at Maurepas School. Livingston Parish Public Schools confirmed he was employed there from February 2021 until October 2024, serving as a physical education teacher and basketball coach.

The district said he resigned to pursue another employment opportunity. WAFB reported that Sparks was transferred to the Livingston Parish Detention Center without bond.

Initially, the Tangipahoa Parish School District placed Sparks on unpaid leave.

“The employee has been placed on unpaid leave pending the outcome of the charges. The safety and wellbeing of our students remain a top priority,” the district said in a statement reported by WDSU. “We will continue to work in collaboration with law enforcement to support their work and help ensure the safety and security of our students.”

By October 8, Superintendent Melissa Martin Stilley confirmed to WBRZ that Sparks was no longer employed by the district.

Ponchatoula police initially emphasized that no current students at either D.C. Reeves Elementary or Ponchatoula Junior High were involved in their investigation. Authorities have not publicly established the full number of alleged victims.

Unfortunately, the Trey Sparks case is not the only recent investigation involving an educator accused of exploiting children.

In Florida, former Jefferson High School teacher Marvin Jones, 43, was arrested September 24 after investigators alleged that inappropriate messages with a 17-year-old student escalated into unlawful sexual activity. According to the Tampa Police Department, Jones faces several charges involving sexual activity and inappropriate touching.

Another Florida investigation involved Cesar Oriol Cardoso, a former Miami-Dade elementary teacher accused of showing students explicit material and inappropriate touching. NBC 6 South Florida reported September 18 that additional charges followed allegations from a sixth student.

Just days before Sparks’ arrest became public, another educator faced allegations involving abusive imagery.

In Alabama, former Calera Intermediate School teacher Justin Daniel MacMahon-Sessions, 26, was arrested October 7 on 16 counts of possession with intent to disseminate child sexual abuse material, according to WBRC. Authorities said they had no evidence the images were produced locally.

These separate cases do not establish that misconduct among teachers is increasing, but they highlight why parents need to recognize potential warning signs.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Know2Protect initiative encourages families to discuss online boundaries, monitor privacy settings, and teach children to speak up when conversations become uncomfortable.

Parents should pay attention when adults request secret conversations, communicate privately with students outside approved school channels, ask for inappropriate pictures, or pressure children to hide interactions.

That includes conversations on Snapchat, Instagram, gaming platforms, and messaging apps.

The FBI also recommends approaching children without judgment when they disclose troubling interactions. Punishing a child for speaking up can discourage them from seeking help again.

Parents can request their school’s policies on staff communication, ask about reporting procedures, and challenge boundary violations before situations escalate.

If exploitation is suspected, preserve relevant messages and account information without forwarding explicit images. Report concerns to law enforcement and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline.

Anyone with information about the Trey Sparks investigation can contact Ponchatoula police at 985-386-6548.

The allegations remain under investigation, but the lesson for families is already clear: protecting children requires open communication, accountability from trusted adults, and taking warning signs seriously, regardless of someone’s position or reputation.
