There has been a lot of talk about what caused the New Jersey Turnpike crash that left Tracy Morgan and others critically injured and killed comedian James McNair. Rumors online claimed the Walmart truck driver had not slept in 24 hours and had been drunk or high. Now the driver is responding.
TMZ reported that a Twitter account that appears to belong to the driver, Kevin, was active early Tuesday. Kevin reportedly wrote that he wished it had been him and that he could not express how horrible he feels. He also denied the reports that he had gone without sleep for 24 hours, and said he was not high or drunk.
Kevin also reportedly claimed he was being made a scapegoat because a famous person was hurt. According to TMZ, he suggested he was not negligent and not at fault.
For context, New Jersey State Police said at the time that the driver failed to see slow traffic ahead, and that they did not believe alcohol was a factor while the investigation continued. Kevin was charged with death by auto and four counts of assault by auto, and he pleaded not guilty on Wednesday. Those charges are allegations, and the case is still pending.
