The federal Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) officially voted Thursday to approve a new 24-karat commemorative gold coin featuring the image of Donald Trump.

The decision, made by an advisory panel recently filled with presidential appointees, has triggered immediate criticism from Democrats and currency oversight groups who argue the move bypasses long-standing traditions against featuring sitting leaders on money.

The approved design is reportedly based on an official White House photograph and depicts Trump in a suit with a focused expression. During the session, commission members praised the concept and suggested the physical coin should be as substantial as possible to reflect Trump’s personal brand.

“The larger the better, and the largest of that circulation, I think, would be his preference,” said Chamberlain Harris, special assistant and CFA appointee. Harris argued that depicting the current leader is a fitting way to celebrate the nation’s upcoming 250th birthday because “He’s presiding over the country.”

Other members of the panel supported the push for a larger format. James McCrery II, another Trump appointee and architect, told the group, “I think the president likes big things.”

The project faces significant friction from the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC), a separate body established by Congress to advise the Treasury. Critics have suggested the administration is attempting to mint the coin without the panel’s necessary input, which could lead to legal challenges.

While federal law generally prohibits living presidents from appearing on circulating currency, the Treasury is arguing that commemorative gold coins fall under a different set of legal authorities.

U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach defended the initiative in a formal statement, linking it to the country’s semiquincentennial celebrations. “As we approach our 250th birthday, we are thrilled to prepare coins that represent the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, and there is no profile more emblematic for the front of such coins than that of our serving President, Donald J. Trump,” Beach stated.

Beach also claimed the Mint fulfilled its obligations to the citizens’ committee, asserting they “expressly declined” opportunities to review the designs. He noted that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent maintains “sole discretion on final design selection.”

On Capitol Hill, Democratic Senators Jeff Merkley and Catherine Cortez Masto have already introduced the “Change Corruption Act” to block any living or sitting president from appearing on U.S. currency or commemorative coins.

With some commemorative gold coins retailing for thousands of dollars, the debate over this 250th-anniversary tribute remains a high-stakes political and legal battle.
