According to him, advisors told him the name might not “sound good,” which is when he dropped it. He later tried to laugh it off, but the statement was already out there, and it landed exactly how you think it did.
The comment came while Trump was discussing his administration’s decision to refer to the body of water as the “Gulf of America” in federal usage. That change was made earlier in his second term and applies only to how US agencies label maps and documents. It does not change what other countries call it, and it does not alter international law.
