How Many Lies Did Trump Tell During His State of the Union? We Fact Checked It

Donald Trump made sweeping claims about the economy, immigration, crime and more. Here’s what the numbers actually show.

Donald Trump delivering his second term State of the Union address to Congress

Trump -grok

Donald Trump used his first State of the Union of his second term to declare that America is “back, bigger, better, richer and stronger than ever before.” He told the country he inherited a mess and turned it into a global powerhouse. So we fact checked how many of those claims actually hold up.

The answer is not flattering.

Trump claimed he inherited “a stagnant economy” with “inflation at record levels.” But annual real GDP growth was 2.5 percent or higher each year under Joe Biden. Inflation had already cooled to 3 percent from its 9.1 percent peak by the time Trump took office.

He also said the economy “is roaring like never before.” Yet federal estimates show real GDP growth in 2025 slowed to 2.2 percent. The unemployment rate has also increased slightly under Trump.

Then came the prices line.

Trump said prices are “plummeting downward” because of his policies. Inflation has declined from its peak, but overall prices are still rising. Slower inflation is not the same thing as falling prices.

He declared that “more Americans are working today than at any time in the history of our country.” That is technically true. However, it ignores population growth, and job growth slowed last year.

On health care, Trump said Americans “will now pay the lowest price anywhere in the world for drugs.” While negotiations lowered prices for some specific drugs in certain cases, there is no evidence of a broad nationwide drop in prescription drug costs.

Trump also repeated his claim that he secured more than 18 trillion dollars in global investment commitments in 12 months. That figure has been widely questioned and lacks full public documentation to support the scale he described.

Border security was another headline moment. Trump claimed the flow of deadly fentanyl across the border is down by a record 56 percent in one year. He did not provide verified data during the address to support that exact number.

Gas prices got the spotlight too.

Trump said gasoline is “now below 2.36 a gallon in most states.” In reality, no state’s average was that low, and the nationwide average sits around 2.94 per gallon.

He continued to claim he ended “eight wars,” a number that has not been substantiated by independent foreign policy tracking. He also said the United States “obliterated Iran’s nuclear weapons program.” Experts have said the program was damaged, not destroyed, and Trump is now considering further military action regarding Iran’s nuclear activity.

Trump insisted he presided over a “tremendous renewal” of religion in America. Recent polling shows religious affiliation and church attendance have continued to decline.

On military benefits, he said 1,776 dollar “warrior dividend” bonus checks were paid from tariff revenue. In reality, those funds came from a reallocation originally earmarked for increased housing allowances.

Immigration claims were some of the most explosive.

Trump repeated that many immigrants came from “prisons” and “mental institutions,” and he claimed the Biden administration allowed in 11,888 murderers. Those assertions lack verified evidence in official data releases.

He also boasted about stock market gains since his election. However, those gains were smaller than each of the last two years under Biden.

On taxes, Trump said his signature legislation eliminated taxes on tips, overtime and Social Security benefits for seniors. While the bill created substantial tax breaks, they do not apply universally to every worker or senior.

Election claims made another appearance.

Trump said “cheating is rampant in our elections” and called for legislation to stop “illegal aliens” from voting. Multiple investigations over recent years have found voter fraud to be rare, including cases involving noncitizen voting.

He suggested the federal budget could be balanced “if we’re able to find enough of that fraud.” The most recent deficit was 1.8 trillion dollars, which is more than three times higher than the highest federal estimate of money lost annually to fraud.

On crime, Trump claimed he inherited “rampant crime at home” and later boasted that last year saw the largest single decline in the murder rate in recorded history. Crime had already been trending downward since 2022, before he took office.

Energy claims also stretched the numbers.

Trump said American oil production is up by more than 600,000 barrels a day. The increase during his first full ten months in office was about 334,600 barrels per day. He also said natural gas production reached an all time high because he kept his “drill, baby, drill” promise. Production was already at record levels before he returned to office.

At nearly every turn, the address leaned on sweeping claims that either left out key context or overstated the numbers. The speech had applause lines and confidence. But once you line up the data next to the rhetoric, the story gets more complicated.

Now the real question is simple.

Do voters ride with the energy, or do they follow the numbers?

He lives in his fantasy world where everything is peaches and cream. He uses numbers like carpenters use a hammer. The hammer is necessary but it is used because it is necessary. Trump feels he needs number’s because it is necessary for his ego, albeit the numbers are inflated. He loves to pat himself on the back all the while America is hurting. No real solution to poverty, healthcare, education, homelessness or inflation.

This poor narcissist convicted criminal is so easy to predict that I like a lot of others could have written his speech for him. Exactly as I as others anticipated. The instructions for writing it would be BRAG on me each statement and to be acceptable there can be no truths spoken, all lies or half truths. Despicable human being!

Once again, as you stated so clearly, he’s using overinflated numbers AND the success of things that another president(s) had achieved as his alone. This man wouldn’t know the truth if it slept with him in the same bed (kinda like the MANY underage girls he raped/sexually assaulted had no choice but to lie next to the fat blowhard). He’s a convicted felon many times over that still has a lot of intelligent people drinking his kool-aid. Let’s get him impeached out or just plain voted out in the next election. This country HAS TO GET BACK TO where we were before he was elected the 1st freaking time. Nothing but a narcissistic tyrant hell bent on screwing everyone.

I just don’t understand how intelligent people have fallen for his bulls**t. It’s so obvious that he is a cheat and a liar. The rhetorical self indulgent crap he spews when he starts talking is so unbelievable, yet these maga followers just drool in delight and keep stroking his ego at the expense of out country. He has NO idea what his job is as president. And his boot lickers don’t care, as long as they keep getting whatever they are getting, to stay in the spotlight. SAD!!
