Florida Congressman Greg Steube is shaking up the transit world—at least he’s trying to. The Republican lawmaker just dropped a bill that demands Washington D.C.’s Metro system get a full-on MAGA makeover.
Named the “Make Autorail Great Again Act,” the bill doesn’t pull any punches. It lays down a clear demand: either the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) changes its name to the “Washington Metropolitan Authority for Greater Access” (aka WMAGA), and renames the Metrorail system to the “Trump Train,” or the $150 million in annual federal funding gets yanked.
Steube says the name change is about “accountability” and believes a rebrand is the fix for WMATA’s years of safety, budget, and reliability issues. With major global events like the 2027 NFL Draft and FIFA Club World Cup coming to the nation’s capital, he says D.C.’s transit system needs to clean up its act—and in his view, it starts with the name.
But critics are calling this political theater. D.C. transit officials are already deep into planning a $5 billion budget for Fiscal Year 2026, focusing on service improvements and avoiding fare hikes. Many see Steube’s proposal as more about politics than transit performance.
This isn’t the first time Trump’s name has been floated for infrastructure. From airports to highways to currency, some lawmakers have repeatedly pushed for high-profile tributes. Now, the Metro’s on the list.
