Donald Trump is taking full credit for the recent revival of a 1970s disco staple.
While addressing a crowd at The Villages in Florida on Friday, the 79-year-old president suggested that his frequent use of the Village People’s hit on the campaign trail is what pushed it back into the spotlight.
Trump said his dance moves to the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.,” which he described as the “gay national anthem,” brought the song to the top of the music charts.
The track’s comeback was undeniable, as it climbed the ranks late last year. Even though Trump told his supporters the song dominated the top spot for months, the actual data showed it hitting a significant milestone.
“The song ‘Y.M.C.A.’ spends a fifth week at No. 1 on Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales, the most for any song by a group in 2024,” Billboard said in an X post at the time. This resurgence was a major shift for the track, which originally peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100 back in 1979.
Trump also revealed that his dance floor energy has caused a little friction at home. He joked with the audience that Melania Trump finds his signature moves to be a bit too much. “She hates when I dance to what is sometimes referred to as the gay national anthem,” he said. “She hates it.”
Despite Melania’s plea for a more traditional image, the president told the crowd he isn’t dropping that bag when it comes to his personality. “We love that song,” he said. “But [Melania] goes, ‘Darling, please.’ You know, she’s a very elegant woman. She goes, ‘Darling, please don’t dance. It’s not presidential.’ I said, ‘It may not be presidential, but I’m leading by 20 points in the polls or something.’ ”
He wrapped up the event by leaning into the routine, performing his usual fist pumps and hip shakes for the Florida residents.
