Wednesday, Meta, the parent company for Facebook and Instagram, announced that former president Donald Trump‘s accounts on the social media platforms would soon be reinstated.

Trump was suspended from the platforms more than two years ago indefinitely over incendiary posts on the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol.

“Our determination is that the risk [to public safety] has sufficiently receded,” Meta President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg said in a blog post. “As such, we will be reinstating Mr. Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts in the coming weeks. However, we are doing so with new guardrails in place to deter repeat offenses.”

Still, according to Clegg, Trump would be subject to “heightened penalties for repeat offenses,” and if he violates Meta’s community guidelines again, the violating posts will be removed, and he’ll be suspended anywhere from a month to two years.

The decision comes on the heels of Trump’s Twitter account being restored following Elon Musk’s takeover. While Trump has yet to tweet, opting instead to remain on his own social media platform, Truth Social, chances are that he’s likely to return to Facebook and Instagram.

Earlier this month, Trump’s campaign sent a letter to Meta petitioning the company to unblock his Facebook.

“We believe that the ban on President Trump’s account on Facebook has dramatically distorted and inhibited the public discourse,” Trump’s campaign wrote in its Jan. 17 letter to Meta, according to a copy of the letter reviewed by NBC News.
