Two men have been sentenced in London to a combined 17 years in prison over the theft of a rare luxury watch, according to reports.
Mehdi, 35, and Mohamed, 36, were found to have targeted wealthy shoppers at high end stores in central London, reports said. The most recent case involved a shopper named Ngoc, who was leaving Selfridges with his wife when someone grabbed a Richard Mille RM 69 Erotic Tourbillon from his wrist. The watch was valued at about $929,000 and was number 19 of only 30 made.
Ngoc, who lives in Vietnam, testified at the trial. Speaking to the Wandsworth Guardian, he said he and his wife had been shopping at Selfridges before 7 p.m., stopped briefly at the tax free lounge, and then walked onto Oxford Street, where he felt someone grab at his wrist. He said the man ran across the road with the watch and scratched his wrist.
Mehdi was convicted of conspiracy to rob, handling stolen goods and possessing criminal property, and was sentenced to 9 years. Mohamed was convicted of conspiracy to rob and cleared of conspiracy to handle stolen goods. He was sentenced to 8 years. Reports say both men are expected to face deportation after serving their sentences.
