Georgia authorities have made two arrests during the investigation into the deaths of two sisters whose bodies were found under a bridge with bags over their heads. Officials have not charged either man in the sisters’ deaths.
The bodies of Vanita, 19, and Trevena, 31, were found by Georgia Department of Transportation workers on May 13 under the Etowah Bridge near Rome. Officials said the sisters were apparently dropped over the bridge, and shotgun shells were reportedly found near their bodies.
About a week later, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced two arrests. Desmond, 28, was arrested on a charge of obstruction of an officer. Devin, 36, was charged with theft by receiving stolen property and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Local reports say Desmond was arrested after a traffic stop, when officers executed a search warrant on his car and he resisted after being told to stay away from it.
The GBI said the arrests came from search warrants served on apartments and vehicles, based on leads and tips received through the GBI Tip Line. Investigators have not publicly explained how the two men may be connected to the sisters’ case. “The investigation remains active and ongoing,” the agency said. Investigators are also searching for Vanita’s gold 1997 Toyota Corolla, which they believe the sisters were in the night before their bodies were found.
