According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, two California men, Edgar Alfonso Lamas, 36, and Carlos Raygozaparedes, 53, were detained following the county’s largest drug bust in 16 years.
Last month, police stopped a minivan leaving a Buena Park residence, where they found over 821 pounds of meth, nearly 190 pounds of cocaine, and 20.5 pounds of fentanyl tablets inside.
According to the DA’s office, these two men had enough fentanyl in their possession to kill 4.7 million people, although a fatal dose of fentanyl can be as low as two milligrams.
“Millions of unsuspecting people have the grim reaper looking over their shoulder. They have no idea how close they actually are to dying from taking a single pill,” Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said. “Fentanyl is cheap, it’s easy to get and it is killing our children, our coworkers, and tens of thousands of innocent Americans who don’t have to die.”
Last year the CDC reported 100,000 drug overdose deaths by April 2021, a 28.5 % increase compared to the previous year.
According to court documents, both Lamas and Raygozaparedes have been charged with one count of possession of sale of a controlled substance, three counts of sale or transportation for sale of a controlled substance, and two counts of possession of sale of a controlled substance.
Both men could face 37 years in prison if convicted.
