Chicago police say two men are in custody in connection with the shooting death of Nykea Aldridge, a cousin of NBA star Dwyane Wade.
According to police, Nykea, 32, a mother of four, was shot on Friday on the south side of Chicago while she pushed a baby in a stroller after registering her children for school. Police said she was not the intended target. She was hit in the head and arm and later died at a hospital, according to reports.
Brothers Darwin, 26, and Derren, 22, were arrested and charged with first degree murder, CBS News reported. KTLA reported that each also faces an attempted murder charge, and that Darwin was additionally charged with criminal trespass. Both men appeared in court on Sunday and were ordered held without bail, according to CBS News. Charges are allegations, and both men are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Police described Derren as a documented member of the Gangster Disciples and said he was on parole. Police said Darwin was also on parole on a gun charge. Commander Brendan Deenihan said there is video of the shooting but that no weapon had been recovered, and investigators were looking into whether a robbery was involved.
Our thoughts are with Nykea’s children and the entire Wade family.
