Two men have been federally charged in separate schemes to take over social media accounts belonging to professional athletes, according to the Associated Press and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, reporting on October 1, 2020.
Trevontae, 21, of Thibodaux, Louisiana, is accused of wire fraud conspiracy and computer fraud conspiracy. Prosecutors allege he used phishing to collect login information for athletes’ accounts and then sold it to buyers for between $500 and $1,000. Ronnie, 20, of Orlando, Florida, is charged in a separate plot involving an NFL player’s email and Instagram logins.
According to court documents, Ronnie allegedly threatened to leak private photos of the player unless he was paid. The player reportedly paid $500 in 2018, and prosecutors say a demand for another $2,500 followed. The two cases are not connected.
The victims include two NFL players and one NBA player. They were not named, and authorities said all lived in New Jersey at the time. The charges are allegations, and both men are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
