Two University of New Hampshire students were arrested and accused of using stolen credit cards to pay for tuition, according to university police.
Police say they arrested Chunyang and Chenghan in Durham on May 16 on fraud charges. Authorities allege Chunyang tried to pay the school more than $56,000 using credit cards from people in Texas, California, Virginia, Florida, New Jersey, Wisconsin and Australia. Chenghan is accused of using a stolen card belonging to a Maryland resident to pay a $6,300 college bill.
News reports say the investigation began after the school’s business office flagged the activity. Both students are 20 years old. They reportedly told investigators that an unknown person had offered to pay their tuition at a discount. They say they sent money to that person and later received notices that their tuition had not been paid.
Chunyang told investigators he had no idea the person was paying with stolen cards. He now faces nine felony charges, and Chenghan faces one felony and one misdemeanor charge of attempted fraud. Both pleaded not guilty and were released on $5,000 bail. They are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
