Two University of Texas wide receivers, Kendall Sanders, 20, and Montrel Meander, 19, were arrested Thursday and charged with felony sexual assault. Sanders also faces a charge of improper photography. Both players have been suspended by head coach Charlie Strong and were released on personal recognizance bonds.
According to the arrest affidavit, as reported by multiple outlets, a female student told police she was assaulted in a campus dorm room on June 21. Police were called to the dorm at 3:43 a.m. and found her crying near an entryway service desk. The affidavit says she knew both men. She told police she went back to Meander’s dorm with him and that they began consensual sex. She said Sanders then came to the door, and that she was assaulted by Sanders and then Meander over her objections.
She also told police she suspected Sanders used his phone to take a photo or video of her. Detectives reportedly found at least one photo of her on the players’ phones. The affidavit also says the players texted each other during earlier police interviews about their stories.
Sanders’ attorney, Brian Roark, said the allegation alone should not change a young man’s life and that Sanders is innocent. Campus police said the players first cooperated and later asked for attorneys. Charlie Strong said he was extremely disappointed by the accusations, and university president Bill Powers said student safety is the school’s top priority. The charges are allegations and had not been proven at the time of this report.
