“Why Did I Get Married Again” is officially heading to Netflix on September 9, and Tyler Perry fans have every reason to be excited. The film marks the third installment in one of Perry’s most beloved franchises, bringing back the original couples nearly two decades after the story first hit theaters.

According to PEOPLE, the sequel was confirmed alongside exclusive first look images showing Perry, Sharon Leal, Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones, Michael Jai White, and Tasha Smith back in their familiar roles, joined by a major new addition in Taraji P. Henson.
The “Why Did I Get Married” franchise began in 2007 with a film adaptation of Perry’s stage play of the same name. That original movie followed four married couples, all close friends, who gathered for a week long retreat meant to strengthen their relationships. Instead, the trip exposed cracks that had been building for years. Released by Lionsgate, the first film starred Perry, Janet Jackson, Jill Scott, Malik Yoba, Sharon Leal, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, and Richard T. Jones. It opened at number one at the box office and pulled in more than $55 million worldwide off a modest $15 million budget. A sequel, “Why Did I Get Married Too,” followed in 2010 and sent the couples to the Bahamas, where an unexpected arrival forced old wounds back open. The franchise later expanded into television with “For Better or Worse,” which ran on TBS starting in 2011.
Fans have been requesting a third film for years, and for a while it seemed like it might not happen at all. Perry appeared on “The Sherri Show” in December 2024 and shut down rumors of a follow up. That makes the arrival of “Why Did I Get Married Again” feel even bigger for longtime supporters of the series. The film is part of Perry’s ongoing partnership with Netflix, which has already produced hits like “Madea’s Destination Wedding” and “Straw,” the latter of which spent five weeks on Netflix’s Global Top 10 list and reached number one in 62 countries.
This time around, the couples reunite for a destination wedding as Marcus and Angela’s daughter prepares to get married. According to the official Netflix logline, after being apart for some time, the group quickly realizes that even though circumstances change, old patterns tend to stick around. Watching their own children grow into versions of themselves forces the couples to reflect on the examples they set. Production took the cast to Lake Como in Italy for filming that ran from late September through late October of 2025, before the production moved to Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta for the remainder of the shoot, according to Netflix’s official listing.
Perry is once again writing, directing, producing, and starring, with Angi Bones and Tony Strickland producing alongside him. The returning cast includes Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Lamman Rucker, and Sharon Leal, with Taraji P. Henson joining the ensemble for the first time. Newer additions to the cast round out the next generation of the story, including Armani Greer, Everett Osborne, Da’Vinchi, Laya Deleon Hayes, Jaden Michael, Charles L. Smith II, Derrick A. King, and Sydney Winbush, according to Deadline.
One notable absence is Janet Jackson, who played Dr. Patricia Agnew in the original film and did not return for this installment. Michael Jai White addressed her absence during an appearance on “The Breakfast Club,” promising fans will get closure on her character despite her not being part of the new film. White also spoke about what makes this chapter different, noting that the script tackles the facade parents often put up for their children, hiding the mistakes they made along the way before their kids were old enough to understand.
The timing of the release feels intentional too. September lands close to the anniversary of the original film’s October 2007 theatrical debut, giving the three-quel a full circle moment nearly nineteen years later. For a franchise that started on the stage before Perry ever built the media empire he runs today, “Why Did I Get Married Again” represents both a homecoming and a chance to introduce the story to a new generation of Netflix viewers who may have never seen the originals.
