An Uber driver has been arrested after police say he tried to break into his passengers’ home right after dropping them off at the airport.
According to CBS17, police say the driver, Jackie, took the passengers from an Airbnb rental in San Mateo to San Francisco International Airport. After the ride, police say he returned to the pickup address and tried to get inside.
Police say the home had a Ring doorbell and a security alarm, which scared him off. Authorities say he then broke into a different nearby home that also had a Ring system. The homeowner, Scott, described the scene to CBS17. “He tore apart the whole house,” Scott said, adding that the safe had been opened.
CBS17 reports the victims posted their doorbell footage to the Ring community, which helped identify the suspect. The Airbnb owner then reportedly contacted the guests, who recognized the man as their Uber driver. Police say he was tracked down through the Uber app.
Jackie was arrested and, according to police, charged with burglary and attempted burglary. As with any case, a charge is not a conviction. Police say they are still looking into whether other break ins in the area are connected. Uber says it is cooperating with authorities.
The victims told CBS17 they want ride share companies to do more to screen drivers.

That’s awful. San Mateo is in California and they do run background checks in California. It has to be spotless in order to get approved. How did he ever get to drive for Uber with a dirty background?
