United Airlines’ New Bag Fee Will Cost You More—Fuel Costs Are Driving the Spike

Air travel just got a little more expensive, and not in a way passengers can easily avoid. United Airlines is raising checked bag fees by $10, tightening the squeeze on travelers as fuel prices surge across the industry.

Starting with tickets purchased April 3, the airline will charge $45 for a first checked bag if travelers prepay and $50 if they wait until within 24 hours of departure. The increase applies to most domestic routes along with flights across Mexico, Canada, and Latin America.

“United is raising first and second checked bag fees by $10 for customers traveling in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada and Latin America beginning with tickets purchased Friday, April 3,” the carrier said.

The move lands just days after JetBlue Airways raised its own bag fees by as much as $9, signaling a familiar pattern where competitors quickly mirror each other’s pricing strategies.

Behind the hikes is a sharp rise in jet fuel costs, which have climbed more than 80% since late February following military action involving the U.S. and Israel targeting Iran. Fuel remains one of the airline industry’s largest expenses after labor, so increases tend to hit consumers fast.

There are still ways around the added cost. Airline credit cards, elite frequent flyer status, and premium cabin tickets often include free checked bags. United also noted that some travelers can still save $5 by prepaying online.

“United Chase credit card holders, MileagePlus Premier members, active military members, and customers traveling in premium cabins can still check a bag for free, and customers in most markets will still enjoy a $5 discount if they prepay for their bags online 24 hours before their flight,” United said.
