Black Friday and Cyber Monday are the biggest shopping days of the year. This year, UPS instructed drivers to temporarily stop collecting orders from six major retailers because the number of packages exceeded delivery capacity. Gap, Nike, L.L. Bean, Hot Topic, Newegg, and Macy’s have received UPS shipping limits.
“They told these large shippers months ahead of time that, you know, this is your allocation for certain days for certain weeks,” Paul Ziobro of the Wall Street Journal reported. “But if you’re going to go over that we’re not going to pick up your packages.”
According to ShipMatrix, a company that collects data on the shipping industry, UPS and FedEx presented ideas to retailers to curb demands.
“It is very difficult for these carriers to expand their network in such a short time to handle such a huge surge in volume of essential items,” Satish Jindel, president of ShipMatrix, said to Goodmorning America.
UPS says that shipments will be delayed, but they will be delivered.
“If demand exceeds planned allocations, we will work with our larger customers to ensure the volume gets picked up and delivered as more capacity becomes available in our network,” UPS told ABC news.
Ziobro encourages people to order items early and not to wait until the week before Christmas to place orders.
