Maggie, one of the people injured in the Wednesday night shooting at Irving Plaza in New York, is speaking out about how she says police have treated her while she recovers in the hospital, according to the New York Post.
The young woman from the Bronx was reportedly hit in the leg by a stray bullet. In a recent Instagram post, she said she was out of surgery but still in the hospital. She wrote that she had not yet spoken to any reporters and was focused on healing and seeing her family.
Her lawyer, Emel McDowell, told the Post that police want to investigate the shooting and that his client understands that. He said she is a victim and is not under investigation or in custody. According to McDowell, officers stationed at her hospital room have made it hard for her to see family, and he argued that the situation is making her recovery harder.
McDowell also said Maggie sent a letter to the NYPD asking that officers be removed from her hospital room. The letter reportedly argued that the police presence was emotionally draining and an obstacle to her recovery. The Post also reported that she plans to sue the NYPD and Irving Plaza. The sources we reviewed did not include a response from the NYPD to her claims about her treatment, or from Irving Plaza.
Here is what authorities have said so far. Rapper Troy Ave was arrested at a Manhattan hospital on Thursday and charged with attempted murder and two counts of criminal weapon possession in connection with the shooting. Another man, Ronald McPhatter, was killed, and as of now Troy Ave has not been charged in his death while police wait on ballistics results. According to her lawyer, Maggie was in the green room with her boyfriend when the shots started. McDowell said she heard the gunfire, felt a burning sensation in her leg, and hit the ground screaming.
This is a developing story, and we will keep you posted as more is reported.
