A video that spread quickly on social media has led to the suspension of three students at York County School of Technology in York, Pennsylvania.
According to local news reports, the video shows students carrying a Donald Trump sign through the school hallway on Wednesday while a voice can be heard chanting “white power.” A school official confirmed that the students involved were identified and disciplined. The school added extra security on Thursday, and no disturbances were reported.
Several students told reporters that racial tension at the school had been building for months. “They have been calling me Mexican,” one student said. “Saying I need to get sent over the border.” A parent said she had raised the problem with school officials several times and believes the election made some people more vocal about their views.
The school said the incident was under investigation. York’s mayor also issued a statement after hearing from concerned parents. She said she met with the school’s director, that the students responsible were suspended, and that the incident appeared to be isolated. She also called for continued conversation and events that celebrate the school’s diverse student body.
According to reports, schools in Michigan and Minnesota were dealing with similar incidents in the days after Tuesday’s election.
