According to local media sources, a Vietnamese man was sentenced to five years in prison for violating a 21-day quarantine order and spreading COVID-19.
A Vietnamese court found Le Van Tri guilty of “transmitting a serious contagious disease” to eight people, one of whom died.
According to the investigation, Van Tri, 28, broke his quarantine in July by riding his motorcycle from Ca Mau to Ho Chi Minh City. He also lied on a health disclosure form.
As a result of mass testing, careful contact tracing, and strict quarantining measures, Vietnam had one of the world’s best rates for preventing the spread of the coronavirus in 2020.
However, those rates have skyrocketed with the delta variant, with waves of new infections sweeping the country this summer. According to the BBC, Vietnam has had 530,000 cases in the last three months, with 13,300 deaths.
According to Reuters, two other persons in Vietnam have been sentenced to an 18-month and two-year suspended prison terms for the same type of allegations.
