A federal jury in Virginia has convicted a Chesapeake gynecologist in a case involving insurance fraud and surgeries that authorities called unnecessary.
According to the Associated Press, the jury found Javaid, 70, guilty on 52 counts. Prosecutors said he defrauded health insurance programs and told patients they needed surgeries, including hysterectomies and tubal ligations, that were not medically necessary. He faces up to 465 years in prison.
Prosecutors also said he billed for diagnostic procedures that were never performed, falsified records to induce labor early, and backdated forms tied to the waiting period required by Medicaid for sterilization procedures. The AP reports that 173 women came forward with similar experiences after his arrest in October 2019.
The AP also reported that Javaid pleaded guilty to two counts of tax fraud in 1996 and received five years of probation, plus an order to pay more than $100,000 in fines and restitution.
U.S. Attorney G. Zachary Terwilliger said Javaid “preyed upon his trusting patients.”
His attorney, Lawrence Woodward Jr., said last year that his client had received a flood of unsolicited emails from patients praising him.
Sentencing is scheduled for March 31.
