Montgomery County Jail

New details have emerged in the case of a Virginia Tech football player accused of murdering a man he met on a dating app and believed was a woman.

Isimemen Etute, 18, has been charged with second-degree murder for the May 31 homicide of 40-year-old Jerry Paul Smith.

In court on Wednesday, it was revealed that the two were only known to each other for a short time.

According to prosecutors, Etute met Smith through a dating app, but he initially thought Smith was a woman named Angie. The pair met in person, and Smith gave Etute oral sex.

The two met up for a second time, and that is when Etute discovered that Smith was a man. Etute became angry and punched Smith in the face repeatedly. He also stomped Smith’s face with such force he broke every bone in his face.

A judge set Etute’s bond at $75,000. The prosecution initially appealed the bond, but the appeal was later dropped. As a condition of his bond, he will wear an electronic monitoring device and was placed under house arrest at his parent’s home in Virginia Beach.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 23.
