A DJ Envy hygiene confession on Tuesday’s Breakfast Club: his wife, Gia Casey, had to show him he was not washing his backside properly in the shower. It came about an hour and a half into the show and it has not stopped traveling since.

Envy did not volunteer this out of nowhere. The crew was working through Eric Benét’s comments about grown men who believe washing with soap and water somehow makes them gay. Benét’s position was blunt. If you think cleaning yourself is a threat to your masculinity, you are probably the one with something to sort out, and he told those men to wash expeditiously. That clip had already been making rounds. Envy heard it, sat with it, and decided to put himself on the record.
“All right, confession confession. I tell too much up here, my wife hates it but it’s all good,” he said, and then told it anyway. He used to be the type of guy who did not, in his words, get up all in there. He had never thought about it. Soap ran down, water ran down, and as far as he understood the process, that was the process.
Then came the shower. Envy mentioned that he and Gia wash each other, tossing it out like the least remarkable detail in the story. One day she got up in there and his reaction was a full stop. Whoa. That was the moment he understood he was supposed to be washing thoroughly and correctly. His summary of the years since is that ever since that, he washes. His advice to any man still running the old system is that you should get up all in there, because you do not want stinky ass.
He could have stopped there. Jess Hilarious was never going to allow that.
She wanted specifics. Did Gia have to detail him? Was there dingleberry removal involved, butt crust, the whole job? Were his boxers crunchy by the end of the night? Envy laughed and made a distinction he clearly felt was important, which is that his briefs are not crunchy anymore and that whole era was when he was younger. Jess landed the closer: imagine how long Gia sat with that information before she said something, and how close she came to leaving over it.
None of this should surprise anybody who follows the Caseys. They met in high school, have been together for decades, and have six children. A man who has publicly walked through cheating on his wife is not going to get precious about a story where the worst thing he did was misunderstand a washcloth. Women started saying they have had a version of this exact conversation. Men started saying nobody ever taught them differently. That is the real story underneath the jokes. A generation of boys absorbed the idea that being thorough below the waist was suspect, that lotion was extra, that a washcloth was optional, that caring how you smell was somebody else’s department. Nobody sat them down and explained it. They carried it into adulthood and a partner eventually had to run the correction, usually years in, usually gently, usually more than once.
