The Washington Commanders and global design firm HKS have released the first conceptual renderings of a proposed new stadium planned for the former RFK Stadium site, marking a major step in the franchise’s long-term future in Washington, DC.
The roofed venue is designed as a year-round hub for football, concerts, and community events, with sustainability and immersive fan experiences at the center of the vision. HKS, selected as lead architect in November, developed the initial concepts in collaboration with the Commanders. The firm is known for landmark venues including SoFi Stadium, U.S. Bank Stadium, and AT&T Stadium.

With seating for more than 70,000 fans, the stadium is positioned as a catalyst for mixed-use development and a new civic gathering place along the Anacostia waterfront.
“We are proud to share the first visuals of our future stadium, a defining milestone in the next phase of the development process,” said Mark Clouse, President of the Washington Commanders. “This moment underscores the strength of our partnership with HKS, whose thoughtful, forward-looking approach has helped us shape a concept that is worthy of its extraordinary site along DC’s Monumental Axis and truly embodies the spirit and character of the District.”
Clouse added, “We’re designing a stadium that amplifies the energy of football, supports year-round events, and becomes a place the community can be proud of.”
HKS Global Venues Director Mark A. Williams said, “Every design decision is guided by the significance of place… generations of memories rooted in RFK Stadium.”
DC Mayor Muriel Bowser called the project “a beautiful and unique waterfront stadium” that will drive jobs and economic opportunity.
The design aligns with the L’Enfant Plan, dedicates at least 30 percent of the site to public recreation, and features a transparent domed roof that respects the city’s historic sightlines. Community engagement sessions are ongoing, with construction targeted for completion in 2030.
