Washington Football Team owner Dan Snyder is accusing a former employee of taking money to feed damaging information about him to news websites, according to court documents obtained by TMZ Sports.
The filing was made on a Monday. In it, Snyder names Mary Ellen, a former executive assistant who was fired in 2017. He claims she contacted a team employee this year to say a Washington Post story was coming that would not be good for him. He also claims she suggested she had taken team information, including contacts, to help find negative material.
The Post story ran on July 5. It reported that minority owners of the team were unhappy with Snyder and looking to sell their shares. Snyder claims that in early July, Mary Ellen told employees he had done “dirty and illegal” things and that another story was on the way. He also claims she told an employee they would “probably make a lot of money” for information. TMZ reports that sources connected to Snyder say he has recordings and affidavits showing she offered bribes. Snyder’s lawyer said the employees did not go along with it.
On July 16, the Post published a second story in which multiple team staffers were accused of sexual harassment. The report did not accuse Snyder.
Snyder has also filed a $10 million defamation suit against the website Meaww.com over a story that linked him to Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking. In the new filing, he asks a judge to let him look into Mary Ellen’s contacts and finances, saying he believes someone is paying her. Her side of the story was not included in TMZ’s report, and we will update if she responds.
