Is Ozempic Becoming The New Botox? Hollywood's Latest Quick Fix Medication Taking Over The Industry

WeightWatchers is expediting its transition from being a brand associated with diet culture to becoming a company focused on serving individuals who use Ozempic.

On Thursday, WeightWatchers introduced a novel membership plan tailored for individuals using GLP-1 prescription drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy, often employed for weight loss purposes. The “WeightWatchers GLP-1 Program offers members utilizing semaglutide medications access to medical professionals capable of prescribing these drugs, along with daily nutrition plans, assistance with insurance coordination, and additional support programs for weight loss.

The company has commenced promoting the clinic on its website. The support program is now a part of the company’s $23 monthly membership. Members seeking additional access to clinicians capable of prescribing weight loss medications will incur an additional $99 monthly fee, which does not cover the cost of the medication. Alternatively, customers have the option to obtain a prescription from their primary care physician if they so choose.

Gary Foster, Chief Scientific Officer of WeightWatchers, noted that the company has observed that individuals using GLP-1 medications require assistance with a distinct set of behavioral challenges compared to those not using these medications.
The landscape of the weight loss industry has been reshaped by the emergence of diet drugs, compelling companies such as WeightWatchers to undergo adaptation. The introduction of the new program marks the latest progression in WeightWatchers’ increasing incorporation of semaglutide medications.
In March, WeightWatchers finalized a deal exceeding $100 million to acquire Sequence, a telehealth business specializing in providing virtual prescriptions to patients for weight loss drugs when deemed appropriate.
