An 18 year old student charged in an assault on a staff member at Harrison Education Center in Minneapolis has reportedly been released from jail, according to Atlanta Black Star.
Corey faces two felony assault counts, according to MPR News, which cited the criminal complaint. Authorities say Mohammed, a teaching assistant who has worked at the school for about 10 years, was hurt in the incident and taken to the hospital in critical condition. Atlanta Black Star reported that the attack was unprovoked and that Mohammed lost consciousness. Corey has not been convicted of anything, and these details come from the charging documents and news reports.
MPR News reported that the complaint draws on surveillance video and an account from a police officer assigned to the school. MPR News also reported earlier that Corey was being held on a $150,000 bond. Atlanta Black Star later reported that he was allowed to go home without posting bail after his mother told the judge she would look after him. The outlet also reported that he must stay away from Mohammed, wear an ankle monitor and see a counselor. His next court date was reported as June 22.
Mohammed’s family says he is improving. MPR News reported that doctors took him off a ventilator after he was able to breathe on his own. His uncle said, “We feel like a heavy mountain has been removed from our head.”
Minneapolis Public Schools has said the district is investigating, and a local union chapter said it is conducting its own review.
