A Florida woman was arrested after the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office says she directed racist threats at a Black deputy during a stop in DeLand last week. The Sheriff’s Office shared body camera video of the encounter on Twitter.
According to BuzzFeed, Deputy Brandon King was responding to a disturbance call when he stopped Julie, 53, as she was leaving the area. Reports say he noticed the smell of alcohol and asked her to take a breathalyzer and a sobriety test. She reportedly refused and was placed in a patrol car, where the video shows her making racist remarks and threats toward the deputy.
Julie is now facing a charge of making threats against a law enforcement officer, according to the report. She has since bonded out. It was not clear whether she has commented publicly.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood praised Deputy King for staying calm throughout. “Kudos to Deputy King for his calm response,” the sheriff wrote, adding that he was thankful to everyone condemning the hate shown in the video. The department also reminded the public that its deputies wear body cameras.
