Whoopi Goldberg has come to a firm realization about her relationship with marriage: it’s simply not for her. Having been married three times, with her most recent marriage to Lyle Trachtenberg ending in 1995 after just one year, Goldberg has embraced a life that excludes the marital bond.

Appearing on the May 10 episode of “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?” on MAX, while promoting her new memoir “Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me,” Goldberg, 68, opened up about her past marriages. Chris Wallace, 76, probed into why she has decided against further ventures into marriage. Goldberg responded candidly, explaining that marriage requires a level of emotional investment similar to raising a child, an investment she’s unwilling to make anymore.

“I don’t have the energy for that kind of relationship,” Goldberg stated. “You know, when you’re married to somebody, you have to be invested in how they’re feeling. I am not.”

Goldberg detailed that her energy and care are devoted elsewhere—her daughter, her grandchildren, and her friends—but not to a partner. “I’m invested in my kid. I’m invested in her kids. I’m invested in my son-in-law. I’m invested in my friends. But I’m not invested in a relationship that would require as much as having a child requires and I know that that’s not for me.”

She also shared her views on relationships more broadly, indicating a preference for less committed interactions. “I’m not averse to hit and runs,” she said, adding that not everyone is meant for marriage, but they might still enjoy the aspects of intimacy it can bring. “Sometimes a little hit and run is not bad.”

Goldberg’s reflections reveal a deep understanding of her own needs and desires, which have evolved over the years. In a 2011 interview with Piers Morgan, she admitted that her marriages were more about seeking normalcy than genuine love. “I wanted to feel normal and it seemed to me that if I was married I would have a more normal life,” she explained. However, she later realized, “That’s not a good reason to get married. You have to actually want a life with someone through ups and downs, and I just discovered that wasn’t for me.”

Her stance is clear and has been consistent over the years: Whoopi Goldberg values her independence and has chosen a path that suits her, free from the commitments of traditional marital relationships.
